Liberia Web Design System v1.0
The Liberia Web Design System v1.0 was created to give all Government of Liberia websites a clear, consistent, and trustworthy digital style. For more than 15 years, many government websites looked and worked differently, making them difficult for citizens to use and trust.
This project created one shared design system that government ministries and agencies can use to build websites that are the same, work well on mobile devices, and are easy for everyone to access. The system also focuses on low-bandwidth performance so people with slow internet connections can still use government websites easily.
The goal of the system was to make government websites easier to use, improve public trust, save time and resources, and help the government deliver better online services to citizens.
I am sharing the Figma designs and prototypes built using the design system. I am open to walking you through the design system and its components in a video call if you would like to see it in action or have any questions about it.
Role: UX Researcher, Product Designer & UI/Visual Designer(Worked alone on this project)
As UX Researcher
I conducted
user research
to understand the needs and pain points of citizens using government
websites. This involved user interviews, surveys, and usability
testing to gather insights that informed the design of the web
design system. Here are some of the key research findings that
informed the design of the Liberia Web Design System v1.0:
- Many government websites were difficult to navigate, leading to frustration and confusion for users.
- Users had trouble finding important information and services on government websites due to inconsistent layouts and navigation structures.
- Many government websites were not optimized for mobile devices, making them difficult to use for users accessing them on smartphones or tablets.
- Users expressed a lack of trust in government websites due to their inconsistent design and functionality.
As Product Designer & UI/Visual Designer, I designed the visual style and user interface components of the web design system. This included creating a consistent color palette, typography, iconography, and layout guidelines that could be applied across all government websites. I also developed a library of reusable UI components such as buttons, forms, navigation menus, and other elements that could be easily implemented by government ministries and agencies when building their websites. Lastly, I created detailed developers checklist of must do's that are directly related to the research findings to ensure that the design system is implemented correctly and effectively by government ministries and agencies.
Timeline: February - May, 2026
Tools Used: Figma, Claude AI, Adobe Cloud, Google Docs, WordPress, GitHub, Lighthouse, WebPageTest, Advanced Custom Fields.
It is important to note that the Liberia Web Design System v1.0 is a living document that will continue to evolve and improve over time. As the government of Liberia continues to develop and enhance its online services, the design system will be updated to reflect new components, design patterns, and best practices. This ensures that the design system remains relevant and effective in helping government ministries and agencies create websites that are user-friendly, accessible, and trustworthy for all citizens.
